The Wine
If you’ve enjoyed the Ballande family’s Château Pey de Faure before, you’ll know it’s a super find. Even better when the wine has 11 years' maturity. It’s from 2014, a vintage that has been slow to reveal its glories but is now drinking beautifully. The château dates back to the 16th century, but it was when the Ballandes (who also own Margaux’s Prieuré Lichine) took over the property in 1989 that quality began to soar. Thirty years later, the combination of old vines, a modern cellar and top-end winemaking allows them to craft smart, great-value Bordeaux. Rich in Merlot, it has a splash of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc to add structure and finesse. Smooth with hints of morello cherry and spice, it’s a fine match for roast lamb or game.
