The Wine
“Best’s winery and vineyards are among Australia’s best-kept secrets. Indeed the vineyards, with vines dating back to 1866, have secrets that may never be revealed: for example, one of the vines planted in the Nursery Block has defied identification and is thought to exist nowhere else in the world. Best’s consistently produces elegant, supple wines” (Halliday).
The old winery building was built by Henry Best, butcher who turned to winemaking in the mid 1800s. Five generations of the Thompson family have owned the estate since 1920. This is a truly lavish 96pt Shiraz with an elegant dash of Viognier.
“Opti-harvested, whole berry fermentation with 15% whole bunches and 2% viognier. A rich, layered hedonistic wine, fruits of forest/ forest floor, with both blackberry and raspberry on display. The balance of tannins, oak and fruit is evidenced by the wine (and its show success)... 96pts. Great Value” (Halliday).
