Beyond the Labels

There is plenty of good value Pinot to be had if you look in the right places. And this week, we have collected four excellent Pinot Noir from four Pinot-friendly locations: Central Otago, Tasmania, the Adelaide Hills, and Orange, in the high country of central New South Wales. Worth up to $45 each, but down to $29.99 a bottle in our mixed dozen deal, these fine silky reds would make any beancounter jealous.

Wine Summary
From the family owned Corryton Burge, whose winemaking legacy stretches back six generations to 1855. "Since then, our family has dedicated itself to crafting exceptional wines that have become synonomous with excellence in the Australian wine industry." That family includes legendary figure Grant Burge. Today Trent and Amelia Burge carry on that great tradition at their homestead at Corryton Park in the Barossa's Eden Valley. Their mother grew up in Cornelian Bay, Tasmania, and always wanted to produce wine from her home state. This wine sourced from the acclaimed Coal River Valley – excellent for Pinot Noir – is a delight, with aromas of cherries and Black Forrest cake, succulent sweet fruit flavours, delicately edged in oak for a year, giving it attractive savoury notes.

Wine Summary
Ned Goodwin MW picks out the sweet cherry and rhubarb among the "loads of flavour" here. The sweet and savoury nose screams Pinot Noir: herbs, mushroom, red cherry, rhubarb, bay leaf and a slice of rhubarb lead to sweet cherry flavours on the palate, woven together with pomegranate, strawberries, vanilla and a touch of truffle. An appealing glassful to accomapany a range of dishes including game pates and charcuterie. 90pts from the Halliday Wine Companion.

Wine Summary
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit gives it 94pts, calling it "Sweetly fruited and seductively complex, the wine shows dark berry, thyme, cedar, clove and warm mushroom aromas on the nose, followed by a silky-smooth palate delivering refined texture backed by finely woven tannins. Gorgeously styled and expressed, offering terrific drinking. At its best: now to 2028." Bob Campbell MW in The Real Review notes its "…dark cherry, plum, spice/wild thyme, fresh herbs and a backbone of peppery tannins. Accessible wine in a bright, high energy style with an appealing core of sweet fruit."

Wine Summary
From vineyards in Orange grown at 950 metres above sea level. Parcels are harvested a week apart to assist in the search for complexity. The wine is then aged in high quality French barriques. Ned Goodwin MW in The Halliday Wine Companion notes there is "plenty of verve". There is much to enjoy here. "Cherries to the fore with spices, cold tea notes, red fruits and some quality oak well melded. The intensity is maintained for the full length of the wine. Plenty of tannins here, but they are sleek and silky. A really attractive cooler climate Pinot, which should provide pleasure for the next eight to ten years" (Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot).
