Altos de Bergasa is from Bodegas La Eralta, a family-owned winery founded in 1990. Quite young in terms of Rioja. It proudly owns 360 hectares of vineyard throughout the three subregions, with this juicy Joven (young) red named after its first plots, planted in the village of Bergasa. At their modern cellars, they boast 10,000 French and American oak barrels, within which they age their wines – from Crianza to their exceptional Gran Reservas. This wine, however, is designed for drinking young and fruity. Offering silky red fruits, with a tangy lift of freshness, it makes delicious drinking on its own, or with chicken – barbecued, roasted or as a creamy casserole – with risotto, as well as with other more classic Spanish rice dishes. Locals love it, and we're sure you will too.
The wines from Alex Head’s Five Red Star-rated winery often refect his fascination with European style reds, especially those of the northern Rhône Valley. This heads more to into Spanish territory.
“A 50/35/15% blend of tempranillo/carignan/grenache, the vines 15 to 73 years old…Has cherries of all types and colours; the texture a bonus.94pts. Great Value” (Halliday)
Stuart Knox in The Real Review likes its “ Dense ruby hue from core to the glass rim. Blackberry, cola, and vanilla bean aromatics. A richness of black fruit fills from entry while supple vanilla and cola spices flow around the edges. Tannins are silken and supple, ensuring a soft glide to the finish. Good value here.”
Spicy red fruits to the fore in this Tempranillo Graciano blend from Bryan Currie,, who heads the team at the Hunter Valley’s Hungerford Hill. The estate also takes grapes from growers in Tumbarumba and Hilltops, as here. Plenty of elegance in these wines. Pair this with Mediterranean dishes, roasted vegetables, and aged cheeses.
Crafted near the Adelaide Hills, the brilliantly rich, Spanish-inspired Redheads Vin'Atus is a must-have for any serious fan of RedHeads. Made right here in Australia from a trio of Spanish grapes spied on the Rocca's small family property in One Tree Hill, a tiny hamlet between the Barossa and Adelaide Hills. Not quite in the elevated part, it gets quite warm during the day, but there’s a cool draught from the Hills at night, which slows ripening and explains the amazing deep crimson hue. A blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Grenache, this playful drop struts dark, brooding Aussie pizzazz with old-world inspiration. Enjoy complex aromas of spiced plum, dark berries and savoury spice, hints of dark chocolate and vanilla with silky tannins and a pleasant, lengthy finish. Pair your Redheads Vin'Atus with a flavoursome saffron infused chorizo paella. Simply delicious.
