Beyond the Labels
Love Rosé? Want the best in your glass? Then make sure this premium selection is headed your way today! Look forward to fine French drops (including Provence Rosé of course!) and lavish Australian stars too. Provence is Rosé central (as the millionaires and movie stars who love Provence Rosé will attest) and we have two gorgeous examples here. Savour the tantalising, flinty Domaine de Paris Cotes de Provence Rosé 2021 and the elegant and citrussy Domaine de Pontfract Rosé 2021 – both are divine. Provence is not the only province of French Rosé though – try the extraordinary ROC Clairet from Bordeaux and you’ll see what we mean. There’s also a gorgeous Sparkling Rosé – the delicious PS Petillant Rosé NV – that we think you’ll love too. Then, come home to Australia and enjoy two top shelf treasures from Bedlam & Order in Margaret River and Zonte’s Footstep in South Australia.
The fruit for Scarlet Ladybird is sourced from hand-tended blocks in McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek, then destemmed, crushed and slowly drained into stainless steel tanks with only the finest quality free run juice being chilled to 5 degrees Celsius. The wine is allowed to complete a natural malo-lactic fermentation if it occurs. This results in a wine with purity of fruit that is unpretentious and eminently satisfying to allow for regular indulgence. Salmon pink, an array of floral aromas, and specifically violets. A veritable summer pudding of fresh macerated berries and spice dominated by strawberry and cherry. Zingy with lip-smacking nectarine and berry fruit flavours.
ROC Clairet is part of our Gentle Riot – pioneering wines challenging the norm and sustainably produced. Why? To make a wine that's kinder to the planet and tastes terrific. Clairet is Bordeaux’s unique version of a very deep rosé. Almost red, but one that is so deliciously fruit filled and rounded at the edges that you want to chill it! It’s a style that has almost disappeared. Chai winemaker Jean-Marc took all-Merlot grapes from a vineyard with sustainability at its core. It lies just across the river from St-Émilion, on the finest, pure-limestone soils. What colour! Deep cherry and cassis, rounder and less citrusy than normal pinks, yet totally refreshing. A winner with both red and rosé drinkers solo or try with griddled salmon.
Exceptional Crémant rosé, with Golf again. Roche Lacour’s accomplished winemaker Viviane Gianesini works her magic beneath the cool hills if Limoux. Here, the monks of Saint Hilaire are said to have mastered sparkling wine methods in 1531, many years ahead of Dom Pérignon of Champagne fame. Their early success remained a local secret due to fragile bottles that didn't travel well. This appealing pink gains its salmon hue through the gentle pressing of Pinot Noir grapes – just like the finest Champagnes. One of our most popular bubblies, it's a wine to crack open whenever there's a reason to celebrate. Otherwise, treat opening a bottle as a celebration in its own right!
Provence is France’s premier rosé region and Domaine de Paris is one of its most stylish and elegant. A previous vintage even gained mention in the prestigious US journal Wine Spectator: “Very good – a wine with special qualities. Dry and refined, with dried berry and cherry flavors and plenty of minerally notes.” The estate has been owned since 1900 by three generations of the Brun family. 50-year-old Syrah and Grenache vines produce fruit of superb concentration and impeccable purity. There’s a tantalising steely freshness, a flinty backbone coupled with wild strawberries and a lovely savoury note. Fine Provence rosé is not just for summer! The locals enjoy it all year round, on its own or with seafood, chicken, fennel risotto or salads.
Provence is synonymous with lavender fields, sunshine and delicate pink rosés many regard as the best in the world. Since the influx of millionaires and movie stars in recent decades, it’s also become one of the pricier regions of France. Yet, happily, we can still enjoy the trappings of the Côte d’Azur lifestyle with wines like Domaine Pontfract. It comes from a 20-hectare estate with chalky, stony soil and sunshine all summer long. The prime ingredients of Provence rosé, Grenache, Cinsault and Carignan, love these conditions. Winemaker Xavier Paul gives the grapes a gentle pressing to extract a delicate colour and delightful, strawberry-scented aromas. Enjoy this pink on its own, or with olive tapenade or a fresh seafood platter.
The meticulous work of creating beautifully balanced order from the bedlam – and infinite possibilities – of the tasting table is no easy job. The new BedLam & OrdEr range of wines celebrates the work of a quality obsessed team of experienced wine enthusiasts in South Australia. That is exactly what they do, carefully combining top-tier varietals, as here using a rare combination of Shiraz Cabernet and Merlot from vineyards in Margaret River to produce a beautifully balanced wine with strawberry and watermelon aromas, and palate of ripe Summer berries.
