Beyond the Labels
Pinot Gris’s popularity shows no signs of abating, and in this special mixed dozen you’ve four excellent iterations. Irvine’s delicious, fruity Top Gold medal-winning Spring Hill, made by Lachlan Duncan, is in good company with 96pt ‘fresh as a spring breeze’ Gudilly, the King Valley’s 93pt Risky Business, with its gorgeously ripe, balanced core of yellow nectarines, tangy gooseberry and warming spice – and 93pt “expressive, juicy…excellent drinking” (Wine Orbit) Knappstein from Clare Valley. Save $90 on 3 of each for $16.99 a bottle.
Irvine Wines was established back in 1983 by a visionary team who succeeded in putting Australian Merlot at the forefront of the world’s very best. Today they excel at far more than just Merlot - or even reds. Take this very impressive Gris for instance. It’s snapped up a Top Gold and 95 points at the Barossa Wine Show. The Spring Hill range of wines are fresh, vibrant and deliciously approachable. As the winery notes: “A versatile wine that pairs well with many Asian style dishes, or a range of other fresh and tasty foods. A few glasses, by itself on a lazy Sunday afternoon is quite acceptable as well.”
The name Risky Business is decidedly tongue-in-cheek because the partnership headed by Rob Quenby has neatly side-stepped any semblance of risk. The grapes come from vineyards in Great Southern and Margaret River in WA and King Valley in Victoria. This 2023 Pinot Gris is "a versatile wine at the table … bringing textural weight, warm spiciness and apple freshness to the glass. 90pts. Great Value” Jenni Port. The Halliday Wine Companion.
Knappstein remains one of the Clare Valley's most famous names. Despite changing hands several times, "wine quality has remained excellent" (Halliday) This luscious Gris boasts notes of orange zest, ginger spice and ripe pear combined with notes of vanilla and baked pastry leads to a rich, textured, palate with opulent spice-poached pear, quince and lemon honey flavours – through to a clean crisp finish. "Excellent drinking. 93pts" says Sam Kim Wine Orbit.
From an estate set up in 1996, by Simon Sorby Adams, who purchased a 3.2ha vineyard that had been planted by Pastor Franz Julius Lehmann (none other than Peter Lehmann’s father) in 1932. Simon Sorby Adams has three children, Angus, Digby and Sally, from which the portmanteau GUDILLY is derived. The wines are sourced from the Adelaide region in South Australia, these wines are made using emerging varieties, and with freshness and drinkability in mind. Take this very appealing Pinot Gris, for example, which received a score of 96pts in Winestate magazine.
