The Spanish varietal’s ability to retain high levels of natural acid while ripening shines through. Peach, grapefruit and white flowers on the nose; clean minerally palate. Will age for 10 years. Freshly caught snapper, lime and salty chips come to mind. The Halliday Wine Companion gives it 90pts.

Barbera was the variety that established winemaker Andrew Margan as a pioneer of alternative varieties, being the first to plant the Italian varietal in the Hunter in 1998. This juicy Gold-medal 95pt red has become the biggest seller at Margan's cellar door and the former 2019 vintage took out a Trophy. Margan’s 2021 vintage shows Barbera’s hallmark traits of crisp acidity and lifted aromas of sour cherries, raspberries and Turkish delight. Bright red fruits, crushed mulberries and savoury spice drive a typical light-to-medium bodied palate. An impressive, perhaps deceptively light colored red with "…magical savoury acidity... 95pts. These old vines were planted in the 1970’s and produce low yielding and concentrated fruit. Lemongrass and lime peel dominate the aromatics, the palate is light and full of fresh citrus. A vibrant acidity gives this wine line and length. Try it with kingfish sashimi with coriander, finger lime and preserved lemon.
