Beyond the Labels
The case name says it all. These fabulous whites are not only from seven countries around the world but global bestsellers. Savour (and compare) great French and Kiwi Sauvignon, Italian and Hungarian Pinot Grigio, sea-food friendly drops including French Picpoul, Tassie Riesling, home-grown Trophy-winning Trebbiano, and magical blends from Spain, Italy and Argentina. Great value at $16.99 a bottle ($15.99 for UNLIMITED members).
For quality and value, Abbesse Sauvignon Blanc is hard to beat and an all-time customer favourite. It's from our friends, the Bougrier family, with whom we've worked for the last 20+ years. Every year, they search out the best parcels of grapes from Touraine, the Pays Nantais (home to Muscadet) and other regions where the grape shines to get the perfect balance of bright fruit and elegant, citrus zip. They've named the wine in honour of the original Abbesse of the famous Abbaye de Fontevraud nearby, Louise de Bourbon, a major figure in Loire history. This delicious expression of the region’s reigning grape is a fitting tribute to her. Delicious chilled as a glass on its own, it's also a classic with goat’s cheese and all sorts of seafood.
Anywhere, anytime! The Papaveros are Italy’s friendliest family of wines and this refreshing white provides a terrific introduction. Most Italian winemakers are fiercely proud of their region. Winemaker Scipione Giuliani is fiercely proud of Italy. And hugely passionate about quality and value. He says he can’t choose the weather each vintage so he chooses instead the ‘luckiest’ regions for the ripest, tastiest grapes – Abruzzo and Sicily in this case. It’s what makes Il Papavero Bianco so consistently spot on. We call it the ‘Poppy factor’ and it makes for mouthwatering stuff! Open one of Italy’s most reliably delicious whites as a pre-dinner drink or with soft cheeses, salads or seafood dishes. We guarantee you’ll be back for more.
Perla del Mar is the white sibling to the tasty Perla Negra. It comes from a special coastal vineyard called La Marina, 35 miles from Alicante. The wine’s delightfully fresh and fruity style is thanks to the grape selection (mainly the fragrant and ‘grapey’ Moscatel), the fact that the vineyards are surrounded by sea to the north, south and east, and, finally, to the modern methods of talented winemaker Pamela Geddes. Having been in charge of sparkling wine production for Seppelt in Australia, she knows all about keeping flavours crisp and fruity in warm climates. Perla del Mar is an elegant, refreshing wine with a vibrant, lime zest core and hints of lychee and other tropical fruits. It’s the archetypal summer apéritif – all year round!
Meet France’s trendy white Picpoul grape, described by critic Olly Smith as “brilliant value and zinging with lemony freshness”. It thrives on the Mediterranean coast in the very south of France. Indeed, it has its very own appellation, Picpoul de Pinet AOC, stretching from Pézenas towards the fishing port of Sète. This mineral and lemon-fresh white comes from Dutch-born Floris Lemstra's beautiful, 19th-century Château Canet. He runs it with his wife Victoria and both are firm believers in working with nature to make the very best wine from the finest grapes. Their dedication pays off in the impressive quality and character of this tasty fresh white. Not surprisingly, given the vineyard’s proximity to the Med, it’s great with seafood.
Sam Trimboli's 2022 vintage Trebbiano has hit the heights again! This time winning a Gold, Top Gold and a Trophy at the Riverina Wine Show, plus another Trophy and Gold at the Australian Inland Wine Show. Thanks to New South Wales’ hot, dry growing season, the grapes achieved serious ripeness and flavour concentration. As a finishing touch, Sam treated the wine to four months in French oak barrels. You, too, will be impressed by the wine’s ripe citrus-fruit flavours, plus the creamy/nutty nuance imparted by the oak aging. Enjoy a refreshing glass on its own or serve with Italian-inspired cuisine (like white pizza or alfredo-sauced pastas) or fresh seafood dishes.
The crisp, fruit-filled Split Rock has been a bestselling Sauvignon for two decades. And it all started with love! In the 1970s Hermann Seifried, then a fresh-faced Austrian wine nut seeking adventure, travelled to New Zealand. It was a final stop-off on a world tour, mainly to see where the All Blacks came from. There he fell in love with a local primary school teacher, Agnes, and has never left. In 1973 the couple realised their shared dream – to plant a vineyard – and have since racked up a host of awards. Today their three children, Chris, Heidi and Anna, help run the property in Nelson – a region with over 2,400 hours of sunshine, it's the sunniest in New Zealand. No wonder Split Rock is so tropical and gooseberry fresh. Very moreish.
This tasty Pinot Grigio comes from an award-winning cellar in the village of Etyek (50km from Budapest). One of our bestsellers for the past 15 years, it shows just what fantastic quality and value Hungary offers wine lovers. A country most famous for its regal sweet wine, Tokaj, Hungary also has a less well known, 600-year history of growing Italian grape varieties. Winemaker Zoltan Kukola has proven himself an expert, crafting a truly modern range of thrilling wines under the Campanula label, named after a local flower. Each vintage Zoltan ring fences this zingy Pinot Grigio for our customers. Crisp and minerally, it boasts classic ripe pear and green apple flavour. Enjoy as a glass any time or with lighter dishes like fish or risotto.
The 94pt Anon is a citrusy expression of Tasmanian Riesling with a long dry finish. It's from Tasmanian Vintners, a joint venture between Tassie businessman Rod Roberts and Fogarty Wine Group (Deep Woods, Evans & Tate, Dalwhinnie). They've attracted some extraordinary winemakers, including Marlborough-born Liam McElhinney, the former Jimmy Watson Trophy winner. Their Anon Riesling has a talc-like minerality, hints of spice and a palate awash with lime juice, lemon and apple fruit. "Refreshing' doesn't pay the wine its dues." (James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion).
In 1958 in Sicily's town of Menfi, 68 winemakers signed a pact to preserve the island's vineyards and thereby a way of life. 60+ years later, this cooperative has been named 'Winery of the Year' twice – in 2018 by Vini d’Italia and 2017 by Germany’s Weinwirtschaft. It has also gained top marks in the renowned Gambero Rosso wine guide. With these credentials, its members were keen to export and came to us first. This is their Vermentino – a top white grape of Sardinia that also excels in Sicilian sunshine. The wine is named after the winemaker Andrea Palermo's grandfather, one of the 68 to sign the original pact and means 'land of my grandfather'. With pear, apple and zesty citrus, this is an appetising white. Top solo or great with seafood.
Winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua has won Trophies and Golds galore for his Bordeaux whites and this 2020 shows him on top form. For the Le Grand Chai range of wines he uses his enviable network of contacts to source top batches of wine from superior properties that need a home. He has discovered a top pick with this rich, complex white. The first sip reveals hallmark verve and zest with added sophistication, body and a lingering hint of toastiness - not from oak, but from its two years of age. 2020 was an exceptional vintage, so the fruit quality is a delight – great ripeness and intensity, with the acidity to allow a white wine like this to age well. Grassy, herbaceous, gooseberry and citrus aroma with a hint of honey. A real modern classic – serve lightly chilled with asparagus or with fine seafood.
Founded in 1963 by Alberto Zuccardi, primarily to show off a new irrigation system, this winery is now one of Argentina's leading producers. Named after Alberto's grand daughter, Santa Julia is just one of their cellars that have, over the years, won many top awards. Alberto's grandson, Sebastián, is regarded today as one of the country's top winemakers, while his father José was given a lifetime achievement award. Winemaking for The Holdings is headed up by Ruben Ruffo, who has worked for the family since 1990. Having made wine all over Spain, Italy and France, he has broad experience. This is a refreshing blend of bright, almost tropical Chenin Blanc and peachy Chardonnay. Chill a bottle down and enjoy on its own or with tangy chicken.
Sunday Bay is a phenomenon. Kiwi Sauvignon is by far our most popular style, and our range is full of standout examples. So it’s a huge statement that Sunday Bay, year after year, is the one our customers rate highest and re-order most. It's made by an award-winning family winery, who were some of the first pioneers of the Marlborough region. Phil and Chris Rose founded the estate back in 1978, now their five children have joined them, so it's very much a family affair. Their Sunday Bay is a classic Sauvignon. Exuberant grapefruit and grassy nettle character with a bright citrus zip; all the usual Marlborough pizzazz and more. It’s very moreish solo or makes the perfect partner to all sorts of seafood, spicy stirfry or Thai fish cakes.
