Beyond the Labels
For a mere $13.99 a bottle enjoy a superb selection that illustrates the great quality/value double whammy that Spain represents today. A quartet of pure varietals, two Tempranillos, a Garnacha and a Monastrell, sit alongside two fabulous blends in the two-time Gold-winning Monasterio de Santa Cruz and FIVE times Gold-winning Garnacha-rich Ermita de San Lorenzo. Save $118 on this dozen.
As Robert Parker says, “Spain leads the world for sensational wine bargains of character and soul”, none more so than its mature reds. Nowhere else produces mellow, barrel-aged wines of such remarkable quality and price. Take Palacio del Conde – a gorgeously complex, oaky 2016 from Valencia. Part of this region is close to the coast, while the more southerly part is inland, up in the hills, and dry. It’s there that winemaker Marta Martínez selects the finest, hand harvested – from 50 year old vines – Tempranillo grapes for this Gran Reserva, then ages the wine for three years in oak barrels. A wonderfully fragrant, silky red with mature redcurrant and strawberry fruit and a rich, toasty character. Sublime with roast lamb or tapas.
As the late Spanish wine expert John Radford once wrote in Decanter, the tiny enclave of Campo de Borja is “the source of some of the best value wines from Spain, if not the world”. It remains true. Where else could you find such a mellow, complex, oak-aged red at this price? It’s made by our old friend Pamela Geddes at the 500-year-old Bodegas Ruberte. 60% of the wine is Garnacha from vines planted in 1958. They’re not as prolific these days, but the intensity of flavour in the grapes is impressive. The balance is Cabernet Sauvignon, which adds classic cassis character and structure to the spicy, raspberry-rich Garnacha. A rich, velvety-smooth, fragrant Spanish red with vanilla hints imparted by oak. A great choice with lamb or tapas.
This is an intensely flavoured, weighty red, similar in style to the rich, powerful and highly sought after reds of Priorat. The big difference, however, is the price – a fraction of that asked for Priorat wines. It was made at the Padró family cellar, founded in 1898, which draws on the expertise of winemaker Mario García. He has had experience throughout Spain (including Priorat, Montsant and Penedès), and has achieved many 5-Star ratings from top wine guide Guía Peñín. Combining concentrated, old bush vine (up to 70 years old) Monastrell (known to us as Mourvèdre or Mataro) plus a portion of strawberry-scented Tempranillo, it’s a lavish and layered wine that’s really hard to resist. It's a brilliant partner to grilled meats, or pair it with your next tapas feast. Delicious!
For nearly five centuries, the winemaking ancestors of those living and working in the Campo de Borja region sought refuge for their wines in ‘La Cueva’. It was a sanctuary carved into the very mountain itself, a place for them to protect their wines from the searing heat of the Spanish midday sun. Today, the cave provides the perfect cellar for the oak barrels in which the La Cueva Garnacha is aged. Bright cranberry, raspberry, and red plum unite in a juicy combination of flavours and aromas that entice the senses. Subtle black pepper and herbaceous earthy notes give it a savoury groundedness and makes for a fantastic food wine. Salud!
It has been over 10 years since the first El Campeador had Spanish wine lovers clambering for more. The vineyards are situated around the small town of Jumilla, in the southern Spanish province of Murcia. A fine blend of Syrah (50%), Monastrell (40%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). The Syrah vines were planted at an altitude of between 650m and 700m, while the incredible 110-year-old Monastrell vineyard sits even higher and pre-dates the great phylloxera attack that devastated the region`s viticulture in the early 20th century. Year-round sunshine and scant rainfall, produces miniscule, low-yielding vines that develop intensely fruit-forward and richly aromatic grapes. The time in oak adds hints of vanilla and mocha to the dark mass of concentrated black fruits, all wrapped in a smooth and velvety texture. "Brambly and fruity nose full of ripecherries, nicely baked berries, grilled herbs and spices. Ripe and giving on the palate with fleshy, generous fruit and firm tannins. Drink now... 90pts" (JamesSuckling.com).
The Silver Route (named after La Ruta Via de la Plata) is a very appealing red from Extremadura in western Spain. This frontier region is the size of Switzerland, yet has just a million inhabitants. It also has an abundance of cork trees, oaks, black Iberian pigs, and old vines, the age of which ensures intense, ripe, juicy wines. And that’s what you’ll enjoy here. Vibrant, strawberry rich Tempranillo, turbo-charged with peppery, black, brambly Syrah, with that concentration only sun-baked, low-yielding, old vines deliver. Delicious proof that “the most exciting aspect of modern Spain is not what is new, but what is old: ancient vines in undiscovered places” (FT Weekend). Lovely on its own, even better with barbecued kebabs or Spanish ham.
