Beyond the Labels
Lovers of lavish reds from around the world, don’t miss this wonderful 40% OFF mix including wines from France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and South Africa! What a collection! There’s bestselling Gold-medal Le XV du Président from the sun-blessed south of France, two lusciously dark and decadent Puglian black reds from the sun-drenched south of Italy, a TRIPLE Gold-winning prestige Rioja from Spain, a richly flavoured Portuguese treasure and the wonderful Velvet Bee from South Africa, Shiraz Mourvèdre Grenache blend you’ll love to discover.
Le XV is known to thousands as our ‘King of the Big Reds’. It owes its intensity to Grenache from vines, some over 100 years old, that grow on the rocky slopes of the Pyrenean foothills in the Montagne Noire and yield only tiny quantities of grapes. Le XV also benefits from the painstaking care of self-confessed southern French wine aficionado Mark Hoddy, whose draconian selection process sees him earmark in advance every vineyard he intends to harvest and micro-manage every stage of the winemaking. This takes time, but you can taste the result in every delicious glass! Richly textured, with layers of ripe bramble fruit kept smooth by warming alcohol and soft, ripe tannins, this is a red to enjoy with roast lamb, steak or a hearty stew.
Italy’s deep south is best known for big, smoky wines made from its prized local varieties – Primitivo, Negroamaro, and in this case the uniquely Puglian Susumaniello grape. In local dialect Susumaniello means something like “loaded like a donkey”, referring to the wine’s massive amounts of aroma and flavour. Pillastro’s creator Angelo Maci is a leading figure in Puglia’s recent quality revolution, and is fervently proud of local traditions and rare grape varieties. As fans of southern Italian wines – and Pillastro fans in particular – will agree, Puglia offers “undreamed-of character and potential” (Hugh Johnson), and mouthwatering Susumaniello is the supreme example of this. Aromas of prunes, blackberries and exotic spices. Serve in large glasses with braised lamb shanks or caponata.
Our customers know that it's hard to beat Portugal for flavour and value. So we were particularly excited about Vilarissa Valley, made by the Van Zellers – the family who founded the great Quinta do Noval in 1715. They're renowned for the quality of their winemaking - firstly for world-class vintage port, one of which was rated among the greatest wines of the last century. Plus, they've led the field in Douro table wines. For Vilarissa Valley, the team sourced grapes from the high Alto Douro – local grapes with peerless levels of richness and concentration. The result is a deep wine with velvet smoothness and gorgeous richness, and finished in port barrels for extra spice. Expect dark ripe mulberries, currants, plush tannins and a spicy vanilla finish. A classic that pairs perfectly with steak and frites or a rich stew.
Winery Feudi di San Gregorio has helped spearhead a renaissance in southern Italian winemaking, in particular the use of the region’s superb native grapes. Made from Primitivo (the same grape as California’s Zinfandel), this wine is from Gioia del Colle DOC in Puglia. Gioia del Colle can be translated as “jewels of the hill” and the DOC is a 400-metre-high plateau considered to be the homeland of the Primitivo grape. Sea breezes from the Adriatic and Ionian give the grapes much needed relief from the warm Italian sun, creating rich, velvety wines. An organic Primitivo packed with sumptuous berry fruits, a mouth-coating texture and spice kick. Easily enjoyed on its own, but pairs beautifully with spaghetti Bolognese and eggplant parmigiano.
In the most northwesterly corner of Rioja, the flatter land starts rising up into soaring mountains. It's here you'll find the start of the Rioja Alta vineyards – a fine enclave of Spain’s greatest region. There extra altitude freshens as well as ripens grapes slowly to full flavoured perfection. Since most Riojas blend grapes from across the region you almost never see Rioja Alta on labels. In fact, there are only two villages permitted to add it. In one you'll find Juan Antonio Leza’s family winery, the cellar behind Castillo de Epifania. Every grape comes from their sleepy Rioja Alta village. Full of silky dark fruit and strawberry, this red has a delicious 'drink me' style, lovely on its own or with grilled meats or tasty tapas.
The buzz of bees is music to the ears of grape growers. Because where there are bees, there are healthy vines and pristine grapes. Leon Esterbuizen pays tribute to these essential vineyard workers with this velvety Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Grenache blend. The grapes come from the hardy Swartland wine region – a hilly, dry area that's fast gained a name for quality. Nearly half were taken from old bush vines, which produce fruit of excellent concentration and all were handpicked, in the cool of the night for freshness. Whole bunch fermentation and wild yeasts means a gentle touch in the cellar and more layers of flavour. It’s as smooth as its name would suggest, with layers of ripe berry fruit, herb and spice notes. Great with bangers and mash.
