Jim Brand was a deeply passionate Coonawarra winemaker and vigneron who was born into the third generation of an Australian winemaking dynasty. The striking 93pt Yates Chardonnay is the perfect example of well known Cabernet regions, like Coonawarra, being home to equally impressive Chardonnay. It displays strong peach and nectarine accompanied by creamy cashew nuts from barrel fermentation and maturation. Lingering fruit flavours last well after the last sip. With over 130 years of expertise under the family’s belt, Angove have plenty of experience to call upon. In recent years they have been awarded ‘Winery of the Year’ and many medals besides for individual wines. Today, fifth-generation Victoria and Richard Angove run the business, while Sophie Angove oversees viticulture, at the cellar that Dr William Angove started in 1886 near Adelaide (by making award winning brandy – a product they’re still famous for). The new generation continue to pioneer modern styles of wine with a focus on sustainability. Having long since moved away from the weighty, golden, heavily oaked Chardonnays of last century, this beauty embraces bright stone fruit, shot through by lemony brilliance. No wonder the great Chardonnay grape is back in favour.
Zonte’s Footstep wines are hugely popular with both wine drinkers, critics and show judges alike. And once you’ve tasted one of their wines, you soon see why. As UK writer Matthew Jukes says, “Zonte’s Footstep wines are not ‘old world’, nor even ‘new world’, Zonte’s is out of this world!” The juicy, rounded – and exclusive – 93pt Zonte's Footstep Cream Puff Chardonnay is grown in the Adelaide Hills. The cool climate fruit is ripe with yellow stone fruit, melon and citrus characters. Choux pastry notes, light baking spice and a subtle creamy palate inspire the name. "Wonderfully composed and expressed, the wine shows ripe nectarine, lemon peel, cedar and brioche characters on the nose, leading to a beautifully rounded palate that's succulent and supple. Grown along the banks of the Hunter River this Chardonnay hails from the oldest continually operating vineyard in Australia, Dalwood. First planted by George Wyndham in 1828 this vineyard is a piece of living history that continues in this wine. The 2022 lures you in with spicy pineapple, peach and green mango aromas. A melding of tangy lemon and cashew nut flavours fill the palate, with crisp acidity giving a refreshing finish. Richness without high alcohol. "Light and bright straw yellow. Nectarine and reductive aromatics on the nose. Grapefruit pith, sea salt and struck flint notes run tightly bound through the core of the palate, ample power here with equal parts acidity to drive it. It didn't take much encouragement from Yarra Valley winemaker Dr John Middleton to convince TarraWarra Estate's Marc and Eva Besen to plant their first 6 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir back in 1983. Their love of Burgundian wines also played a part. Today, a beautiful cellar door and restaurant stand on the property amid 28 hectares of vines, an extensive nature reserve, cattle grazing and a kitchen garden. The Chardonnay was selected from seven separate blocks across the property, and boasts great intensity of stone fruit flavour, a touch of citrus and underlying cashew nut flavours. Creamy texture and subtle use of oak leading to a fresh, lingering finish. A well-deserved 95pt score the result – this is a treat!
